Tutoring in Texas

Built around the Dallas–Fort Worth metroplex, available statewide.

Blackmon Tutoring is headquartered in North Texas, and the Dallas–Fort Worth metroplex is where most of our in-home sessions happen. Families in Dallas, Fort Worth, Plano, Frisco, McKinney, and Arlington can book an in-person tutor who comes to their home or meets at a local library or coffee shop.

Outside the metroplex, we can help connect your family with a qualified tutor in your area, on a shared whiteboard, with the same degreed, qualified tutors. Families in Houston, Austin, San Antonio, and other Texas cities can be referred to a tutor in their area.

Every tutor holds a bachelor's or master's degree, and many are certified classroom teachers. Several specialize in supporting students with dyslexia, ADHD, and other learning differences, in addition to standard subject tutoring and test prep.

Texas tutoring guide

What Texas families should know about tutoring.

Straight answers to the questions we hear most before a family books their first session.

What is the STAAR test, and why does it matter?

STAAR (State of Texas Assessments of Academic Readiness) is the standardized test Texas public school students take each spring in subjects like math, reading, writing, science, and social studies. In some grades, STAAR results factor into grade promotion, which is why many Texas families start STAAR prep early in the fall instead of waiting until spring.

What should I expect from an in-home tutoring session?

Neither format is inherently better; it depends on logistics and the student. Families in Dallas, Fort Worth, Plano, Frisco, McKinney, and Arlington often choose in-home sessions for the face-to-face structure, while families elsewhere in Texas get the exact same tutor-matching process and curriculum through the same in-home tutoring process.

How often should a student meet with a tutor?

Most ongoing subject support runs on a weekly 60-90 minute session. Students preparing for a specific SAT, ACT, or STAAR date typically move to two sessions a week in the 12-16 weeks before the test, which matches the pacing behind our Plano ISD and Frisco ISD case studies.

When should test prep start before the SAT, ACT, or STAAR?

As a general guide, start SAT or ACT prep 12-16 weeks before a student's target test date, and start STAAR prep at the beginning of the school year so gaps get addressed well before the spring testing window, not after.
