Tutoring built around California classrooms.
Blackmon Tutoring serves California students, from the Bay Area to Los Angeles, San Diego, and Sacramento. Every student is matched with a tutor based on subject, grade level, and learning style, then meets on a shared digital whiteboard, the same process we use everywhere else in the country.
California families come to us for everything from elementary reading support to AP exam prep and SAT/ACT coaching, often juggling a state testing calendar that runs alongside college application deadlines in the fall.
Every tutor holds a bachelor's or master's degree, and many are certified classroom teachers. Several specialize in supporting students with dyslexia, ADHD, and other learning differences, in addition to standard subject tutoring and test prep.

What is CAASPP?
The state assessment California families ask us about most.
California Assessment of Student Performance and Progress
CAASPP (California Assessment of Student Performance and Progress) is the state's primary K-12 testing system, built around the Smarter Balanced assessments in English language arts and math for grades 3-8 and grade 11. California also administers the ELPAC for English learners and science assessments at select grade levels.
Several University of California and California State University campuses have moved away from requiring SAT or ACT scores for admission in recent years, but strong scores can still strengthen applications to private colleges and out-of-state schools, and help with merit scholarships, which is why many California families still prioritize test prep.

What California families should know about tutoring.
Straight answers to the questions we hear most before a California family books their first session.
What is CAASPP, and why does it matter in California?
CAASPP is California's statewide testing system, built around the Smarter Balanced assessments in English language arts and math. Schools use the results to track progress, so a weak CAASPP score is often the first signal a family gets that a student needs extra support.
Do California colleges still require the SAT or ACT?
Policies vary by school and change over time. Several UC and CSU campuses have moved away from requiring scores, but many private and out-of-state colleges still consider them, and strong scores can help with scholarships, so it's worth checking each target school's current policy.
How does tutoring work for a California student?
Your student meets their tutor on a shared digital whiteboard at a scheduled time each week, the same format whether they're in Los Angeles or rural Northern California. Sessions are recorded notes and practice problems are shared afterward so progress is easy to track.
When should test prep start before the SAT or ACT?
As a general guide, start SAT or ACT prep 12-16 weeks before a student's target test date, with weekly or twice-weekly sessions depending on the score gap and timeline.
